Engagement Photos in the Spring Blossoms

One of the things I love most about engagement sessions is that they can tell so much more of a story than simply documenting a couple’s engagement. This spring session among the cherry blossoms was the perfect example.
Cherry blossoms are one of those fleeting signs of spring that don’t wait for anyone. Their peak bloom only lasts for a short window, and sometimes that means planning has to happen quickly. Many couples assume engagement sessions need to be scheduled months in advance, but that’s not always the case. If there’s a specific season, bloom, or weather event you want to take advantage of, sometimes a last-minute session is exactly the right choice.
This session came together on short notice when the cherry blossoms were at their peak. The couple wanted to make sure they didn’t miss the opportunity, but they also wanted to include their two-year-old son. Rather than choosing between engagement photos and family photos, we combined both into one meaningful session.
As any parent knows, toddlers have their own plans. We kept expectations realistic and focused on creating a relaxed experience instead of forcing perfect poses. Even during the moments when their little one wasn’t particularly interested in participating, we were still able to capture some beautiful family images that reflect this season of life exactly as it is.
The best part of the session was, despite the short timeline and a busy toddler, we managed three quick minutes where mom and dad could focus solely on each other. In those few minutes, we captured genuine connection, laughter, and the excitement of their upcoming wedding. It didn’t take an hour of uninterrupted portraits to create meaningful engagement photos.
That’s something I often remind couples: your engagement session doesn’t have to be perfect to be valuable. Sometimes the most meaningful images come from embracing the reality of your life right now. Whether that’s chasing a toddler through a blooming orchard, sharing a quick moment together while little feet run nearby, or simply enjoying a beautiful spring evening, those memories deserve to be documented too.
