There is something incredibly special about photographing a surprise proposal. Months of planning, a few moments of pure anticipation, and one life changing question all come together in a matter of seconds. Austin and Christine’s proposal on the shores of Lake Michigan in Glen Arbor was one of those unforgettable evenings that reminded me why I love documenting genuine moments.

Before Austin and Christine even arrived in Northern Michigan, Austin reached out to me with a plan. He had never visited Glen Arbor before, but he knew he would be staying at The Homestead Resort and wanted the perfect place to ask Christine to marry him. After talking through his plan, we were scheduled for a quiet Thursday evening at one of Glen Arbor’s secluded Lake Michigan beaches.

The goal was simple: make everything feel completely natural while keeping the proposal a surprise.

As with most surprise proposals, there were plenty of nerves involved. Austin was excited, but understandably anxious about making sure everything went according to plan. We coordinated the details ahead of time, and I arrived early with a book in hand, blending in as just another person enjoying the peaceful evening on the beach.

For a brief moment, it looked like our carefully planned surprise might unravel. We accidentally took separate, unmarked paths down to the shoreline, leaving me wondering if I had missed them completely. Thankfully, we recovered just in time as Austin, Christine, and her family made their way onto the beach. Under the perfect cover story of heading down to watch the sunset, no one suspected what was about to happen.

As they strolled along the shoreline, Austin gently pulled Christine away from the rest of the family. Just the two of them stood at the water’s edge, with what appeared to be a stranger quietly reading a book nearby. That “stranger” was, of course, me.

When Austin got down on one knee and asked Christine the most important question of his life, Christine’s expression transformed from calm to complete surprise and overwhelming joy.

The moment she said yes, the quiet beach suddenly came alive. I jumped up with my camera, no longer just another beachgoer, while her family erupted into cheers from farther down the shoreline. It was the perfect reveal.

After the excitement settled, we spent time walking along the beach creating engagement portraits while they soaked in the reality of their brand new chapter together. The golden evening light, the dunes surrounding Glen Arbor, and the endless shoreline of Lake Michigan created an incredible backdrop, but what truly made these photographs special was the emotion behind them.
